Patient and Family Support
By forming a close relationship with the patient,
as non-judgmental listeners, volunteers help to maintain or re-establish
the patient’s sense of self-worth.
Becoming
involved with the daily lives of family members, volunteers give caregivers
increased freedom to live a more normal life.
Here
are some of the activities patient and family support volunteers might
do:
Companionship
for patient
Staying with a patient to allow caregivers a break
Shopping or doing errands
Transportation to the clinic
Light household chores
Helping the families in their bereavement.

- during the weekdays or weekends.

Carmen
As a medical student and than as an intern I have been a volunteer for HPM for 4 years. My greatest gain has been to bring a smile on
a patient’s face. I know how important it is to have someone who
listens to you when you are down, or passing through a crisis. That’s
why I wanted to learn how to listen, really listen to someone in need.
At first, I was afraid I would not know what to say when seeing so much
suffering. I would soon realise that it wasn't my words they needed, but
my presence. I would never have thought that the little I have to offer
can mean so much to them.
